Since 28 June 2025, the Barrier-Free Accessibility Improvement Act (BFSG) has been in force – and with it the legal obligation to make digital products and services accessible.
📌This means that websites, apps and digital services must be designed in such a way that they can be easily used by people with visual, motor or cognitive impairments.
Important: Anyone who does not fulfil the legal requirements must expect fines and legal consequences
❗Affected by the BFSG are, among others, providers of:
– E-commerce & online shops
– Online banking & telecommunications
– Digital service portals & appointment scheduling
– Mobility and ticket booking systems
Micro-enterprises <10 employees & <€2 million turnover are exempt – but user-friendliness is still mandatory!
What does the Accessibility Improvement Act actually require?
Comprehensible texts & clearly structured content.
✅ Alt texts for images & subtitles for videos.
✅ Complete operation via keyboard.
✅ Sufficient contrast and scalable font sizes.
✅ Logical navigation & consistent design.
✅ Compatibility with screen readers and other assistive technologies.
✅ Provision of an accessibility statement.
🔧 Technical basis: Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 – Level AA
