🔒 Against deepfakes: YouTube launches new “AI Likeness Detector”
YouTube is stepping up its fight against deepfakes and AI abuse: with the new Likeness Detection Tool, AI-generated representations of a creator’s face can be automatically detected and reported.
👉 This is YouTube’s response to a growing number of cases in which the identity of content creators has been used without their consent for advertising or to spread misinformation.
The tool is currently only being launched for creators participating in the YouTube Partner Programme.
Here’s how it works:
- Grant consent for data processing in the “Likeness” tab of YouTube Studio
- Scan a QR code with your smartphone
- Perform identity verification (ID + short selfie video)
- Once activated, creators can view all detected videos and request their removal, assert a copyright claim or archive the video.
⚠️ Meta is also tightening protection against fraud and abuse:
- WhatsApp will warn users in future if they share their screen via video call with unknown numbers
- Messenger is testing improved fraud detection
- Instagram, Facebook & Messenger are introducing teen accounts in Germany to offer greater security for young people up to the age of 16
Platforms are increasingly responding to the risks of generative AI and focusing more on prevention. For creators, brands and users, this is an important step towards digital security and responsible AI use.
